AARP members from across the Gulf Coast area assembled in Edna recently at the Jackson County Service Center for the annual AARP Round-Up Picnic. Chapters represented were Brazoria County, Brookshire-Patterson, Cuero, El Campo, Fort Bend, Katy, Matagorda, Sweeny, Jackson, and Victoria with over 200 members attending. Jackson County Chapter 1492 and Victoria County Chapter 829, co-hosted the event.
Ray Berry, Edna, was the master of ceremony and called the meeting to order. Welcoming greetings were given by Berry, president of Chapter 1492-Edna and Yvonne Smith, president of Chapter 829-Victoria. The Colors were presented by the Lolita VFW members. The Invocation was led by Charles Coven. Judge Harrison Stafford II gave welcome remarks for Jackson County.
Berry introduced the key note speaker for the day, P. Gus Cardenas, AARP Texas State president from San Antonio. Cardenas encouraged all to get involved in the Divided We Fail movement. He said “AARP launched Divided We Fail to amplify the voices of millions of Americans who believe that health care and lifetime financial security are the most pressing domestic issues facing our great nation.” He urged everyone to study the election issues and take an active part in the presidential election.
