Fire leaves 3 homeless

Three people escaped an early morning house fire uninjured Thursday, but their home at 1606 Mesquite Lane was destroyed. Diana Rodriquez was drying and folding her laundry after 1 a.m. to avoid having to do the chore the next morning, she said. She was in her bedroom when she noticed a strange smell coming from her utility room next door. more >>

Legislators address pollution, global warming

No one wants to live in smog. Air quality and pollution affects the health of Texas residents. State legislators may hammer out ways to keep the air clean for future generations this coming 81st Legislature. Volunteers needed to help elderly

If you think you would like working with and for the elderly, volunteers are needed now for the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program through the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission Area Agency on Aging. Volunteers, known as ombudsmen, are required to work two hours per week acting as advocates for the elderly, working to improve the lives of the residents in nursing homes in Victoria, Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson and Lavaca counties. more >>

DeWitt County Tax Office issues reminders

CUERO - DeWitt County taxpayers are reminded that Monday, Feb. 2, is the deadline for qualified candidates to make their first quarterly tax payment. This quarterly payment program is for homesteads with an over-65 or disabled exemption. Taxpayers are also reminded that penalty and interest of 7 percent begins on Feb. 1 and increases 2 percent each month until June. Penalty and interest in June is 15 percent and on July 1 goes to 42.5 percent. more >>

Edna issues road closure Sunday to Monday

EDNA - State Highway 111 at the railroad crossing in Edna will be closed beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday. The closure is to allow Kansas City Southern to install rail at the intersection. Flashing message boards alerting motorists to the closure should be erected Friday. Traffic will be detoured through city streets with appropriate signage to guide motorists, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation. more >>
